Interesting. I've always been of the notion that philosophy is much more interesting than fact. Fact has no gray areas. It's black and white only. Philosophy however has plenty of room for interpretation. The fun is in sharing and debating points of…

DELVON nothing ever developed in this film. The writer presented many, many subplots but no story. When you mix in the flashbacks, voiceovers, dream sequences etc. the film began to wreak of contrivance. As aspiring filmmakers we must recognize and…

I have always been of the notion that one of the strengths of African Americans is our ability to improvise. This ability dates back to slavery when blacks had to make do with what they had. Blues and jazz music are great examples of our ability to…

Though I did not see the film or read the novel, I can not critic or comment about the artistry and creative deliverence of the piece. However the subject matter is a different story, to bring to the screen a tear jerking critique on and about the B…

Fascinating topic Dee. Technology has changed the playing field in the film industry. DVD, the internet and yes bootleggers have taken a huge bite out of the cash cow known as Hollywood. The digital era has also made filmmaking assessible to the nov…

Although “Precious” is Geoffrey Fletcher’s first major feature project, he is a graduate of Harvard and N.Y.U. Tisch Film School. Fletcher’s short film “Magic Markers” is a required part of New York University’s curriculum for its Graduate and Under…

From the research that I've done it appears that "Precious" was the first major film project for screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher. Although I'm not impressed with his work on this outing I will definitely keep an eye out for his next project. The dire…

I read the book, "Push", which was one of the most emotionally exhausting reads I ever experienced. When I heard that it was being optioned as a film, I had no desire to view the story on the big screen. I did, however; read the script and although…

PRECIOUS: GREAT FILMMAKING?

I recently went to the theater to see the Lee Daniel's directed film "Precious". I must say I was very dissapointed with this film. The screenplay wreaks of contrivance. The dream sequences, the voice over narrative, the stereotypes, the flashbacks, the dialogue all seem to be smeared on top as oppose to woven within. Because of the Oscar buzz surrounding this film and the star power behind it I was wondering what my fellow A.A.F. members think about this movie.

Best Picture Nominations Now At Ten!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced yesterday that they are doubling the maximum nominees for best picture from 5 to 10. I disagree with this decision. What the Academy needs to do is concentrate on the quality of their choices not more choices. Will this decision have a positive, negative or non-effect on black filmmakers?

Wake Up African American Filmmakers!

African American Filmmakers member Michelle Karman recently wrote, “This site appears to be dead! C'mon, people!!!!”

I don’t understand the inactivity on this site. I’m not sure if it’s apathy, or the fact that many of the members here are busy for months at a time and don’t have the time to log on, but whatever it is, it has led me to question why I still have a profile here and has me considering deleting it. I’m not writing this to cast aspersions on the members of this forum, but to express… Continue
